There was a beautiful garden party and awards show Sunday night, just ahead of the full blood moon eclipse. Members of the Santa Barbara community who dedicate time toward making the “American Riviera” even more beautiful were honored at the Santa Barbara Beautiful annual awards presentation at Hahn Hall, Music Academy of the West.
It was a balmy evening on the lawn outside Hahn Hall, even though clouds offered some relief from the blistering heatwave that apparently has not noticed that summer is over.
Santa Barbara Mayor Helene Schneider, County Supervisor Salud Carbajal, Gretchen Lieff of Lieff Wines (gold sponsor and wine sponsor) and “Mr. Santa Barbara News” John Palminteri (the evening’s emcee) of KEYT-TV were among the VIPs mingling during the reception.
This year’s honorees included the Bath Street Pocket Park (Public Open Space), Plaza Montecito, whose anchor tenant is “The Honor Bar” on Coast Village Road (Commercial Property), and The New Vic Theatre (Historic Revitalization).
One of my favorites of the evening was a single story adobe home with its spacious native landscaped courtyard on E. Canon Perdido St. (Single Family Residence). Hotel Indigo was honored with the ‘Business in Art Award.’ The blue-hued mural painted across one side of Hotel Indigo is hard to miss by anyone strolling along lower State Street near the new La Entrada de Santa Barbara development.
Local philanthropist Jean Kellogg Schuyler was honored for her life-long philanthropy and environmental conservation legacy along the South Coast. She took the stage with her family to receive Santa Barbara Beautiful’s Griswold Award for Philanthropy.
Santa Barbara’s Poet Laureate, Sojourner Kincaid Rolle, shared a poem before the awards were handed out. Attendees received ‘swag bags’ filled with a book celebrating the Southern California art scene, a set of colorful postcards from the Santa Barbara Public Mural Project and admission passes to the Santa Barbara Museum of Art and the Santa Barbara Botanic Gardens.
