Have you had a ‘gut feeling’ or been told to ‘trust your gut?” Now there seems to be scientific evidence behind these old clichés.  Medical evidence is coming out detailing the relationship between our minds and our bellies, and just how important a well-balanced digestive system is to our overall health and well-being.

Experts are discovering that what is happening in our gut can influence what is going on in the rest of our body. Our digestive tracts contain trillions of bacteria or flora – both healthy and unhealthy. We’re also learning that stress may have an effect on your gut flora, and could play a part in knocking your digestive system off track.

In a recent interview on KQED radio in San Francisco, Justin Sonnenburg, associate professor at the Stanford University School of Medicine, was asked about how gut bacteria could affect your mood.

“What we’re discovering is this gut microbial community is a control center for human biology – it’s wired into our immune system, it controls our metabolism it even talks to our brain.” He added “We’re starting to think about how gut microbiota … can be a lever for manipulating our biology.”

A few years ago, when I was working erratic shifts as a radio announcer, I encountered a disconnect between my brain and my belly. My digestive system got out of whack – along with my sleep and mealtime cycles because of the unpredictable routine. It took two trips to the emergency room to discover the problem was a discombobulated digestive system.

I changed my lifestyle, cutting out the hardest shifts for me to manage – the overnighters, and started taking probiotics, digestive enzymes and drinking alkaline water. Around this time, my yoga instructor introduced me to Young Living products, their medical grade essential oils and supplements put my tummy back on track. Today, my digestive system is in great shape thanks to regular use of the following products. These are some of the oils and supplements that keep my belly feeling good:
